250 aniversario Bodegas El Grifo Lanzarote 1775

250ᵗʰ ANNIVERSARY

1775 - 2025

In 2025, EL GRIFO celebrates its 250ᵗʰ anniversary. Founded in 1775 on a landscape shaped by the eruptions of Timanfaya, it is one of the ten oldest wineries in Spain.

Since then, wine has been produced continuously, adapting to each era without losing its connection to the land and its history.

Historia Bodegas El Grifo Lanzarote

TRADITION AND FUTURE

From the open-air wine presses of the 18th century to today’s organic vineyard, the story of EL GRIFO is that of three families and twenty generations of winegrowers.

The current family has been key in keeping the project alive: they introduced the first stainless steel tanks in the Canary Islands, modernized the winemaking system, championed bottling.

They also preserved the old winery —now the Wine Museum— thanks to the advice of artist César Manrique, who also designed the current logo, the Griffin Bird.

ORGANIC CULTIVATION

Today, EL GRIFO reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and innovation as an essential part of its vision for the future.

We apply an organic farming model that respects the balance of the ecosystem and protects the biodiversity of La Geria’s unique landscape.

Our commitment to clean energy is reflected in the use of solar photovoltaic power, which allows us to largely self-supply and significantly reduce our carbon footprint.

INNOVATION

We have incorporated systems for the recovery of CO₂ generated during fermentation, transforming waste into a resource, and we continue to improve water management, a crucial issue on an island with limited water resources.

In the winery, we develop new winemaking techniques designed to enhance the identity of our grapes, extend the longevity of our wines, and deepen their expression.

This approach combines the traditional knowledge accumulated over 250 years with the most advanced tools, in a constant pursuit of wines that are true reflections of their origin and their time.

El Grifo edición especial 250 aniversario Lías 2018

UNIQUE 250ᵗʰ ANNIVERSARY EDITION

As a symbol of this journey, we present our 250ᵗʰ Anniversary Commemorative Wine: Malvasía Volcánica Lías 2018.

Born from an exceptional vintage, this wine has been aged for more than four years on its fine lees — a patient process that gives it depth, texture, and remarkable elegance. Each sip reveals the essence of our volcanic land, balancing the strength of the landscape with the delicacy of our most emblematic grape.

With complex aromas combining mineral, floral, and honeyed notes, and a broad, silky palate, Malvasía Volcánica Lías 2018 embodies our philosophy: to respect time, the land, and the unrepeatable character of this unique varietal from Lanzarote.

This limited edition pays tribute to 250 years of EL GRIFO’s history, to the generations who have cultivated the vineyards of La Geria with effort and passion, and to a way of understanding wine that transcends time.

Two and a half centuries later, EL GRIFO remains a family-owned, independent winery — deeply committed to its origin, faithful to the authenticity of Lanzarote, and to the spirit that has guided us since 1775.
