We are proud to announce that "Piedra a Piedra" (Stone by Stone), the documentary short film produced by 1900 Kelvin about EL GRIFO, has been selected as a finalist in the Official Cinema Cocina Section of the 29th Málaga Spanish Film Festival, which will be held from March 6 to 15, 2026.
A tribute to 250 years of heroic viticulture
This documentary, directed by Javier Vicente Caballero with cinematography by Álvaro Fernández Prieto and Julián Rojas, tells the extraordinary story of EL GRIFO, one of the ten oldest wineries in Spain.
"Piedra a Piedra" captures the fury of a volcano, the miracle of a vineyard: a destructive geological fury that became a superhuman marvel born of necessity; hardship transformed into universal landscape and wine. The 28-minute short film reviews 250 years of history of this unique winery, its deep telluric connection with Timanfaya National Park, and its cultural link with figures such as Saramago, Manrique and Hierro.
The story behind the documentary
The volcanic eruptions that devastated Lanzarote between 1730 and 1736 seemed to have condemned the island to sterility. However, from the ashes emerged a miracle: volcanic picón and "chabocos" (holes in the lava) allowed the birth of a heroic viticulture that defies all conventional agricultural laws.
Today, upon reaching two and a half centuries of life, EL GRIFO keeps alive a unique tradition in the world. The documentary also explores the challenges this historic winery faces in the face of climate change, a highly topical issue.
Cinema Cocina: showcase of the best gastronomic cinema
The Official Cinema Cocina Section, organized in collaboration with Lumen Proyectos Gastronómicos and sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, is the first gastronomic film section of a non-specialized festival to enter official competition. This section presents Spanish and Ibero-American documentaries that explore the relationship between cinema and gastronomy, linking sectors directly or indirectly related to this culinary universe.
A team with a recognized trajectory
Javier Vicente Caballero, director of the short film, has an extensive career in journalism specializing in travel, gastronomy and wine tourism in media such as El Mundo, Sobremesa or Jot Down. His work as a filmmaker alternates between writing scripts for commercials and directing branded content pieces for brands and agencies.
The production is handled by 1900 Kelvin Factoría de Contenidos, a production company specialized in high-quality audiovisual content.
See you in Málaga!
"Piedra a Piedra" will be screened on Monday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m. at the Teatro Echegaray. This selection represents recognition of artisanal work, the passion for telling unique stories and the ability to transform winemaking tradition into cinematic narrative.
We are enormously proud to be part of this prestigious selection and we thank the Málaga Festival team for valuing our work. This documentary not only celebrates 250 years of EL GRIFO's history, but also pays tribute to all those who turn adversity into beauty, stone by stone.
