Biodiversity tour: the insect hotel

A honeycomb-shaped insect hotel, made of yellow wood with compartments of branches, trunks and leaves, located on volcanic soil next to a stone wall in Lanzarote.

Committed to sustainability and biodiversity, at EL GRIFO we have created an insect hotel on our Masdache estate. This refuge, built entirely from recycled materials sourced from the winery itself—pallets, pruning rods, vines, and old roof tiles—serves as a connection point between fauna and flora, encouraging the presence of species beneficial to the vineyard.

Among the regular visitors are solitary bees, ladybugs, lacewings, beetles, and spiders —all natural allies in the biological control of pests and pollination. With initiatives like this, we aim to maintain healthy soils and a more balanced and resilient viticultural ecosystem.

Its main functions:

  • Promote natural pest control
  • Improve vineyard biodiversity
  • Contribute to the pollination of nearby species

This space supports the ecological balance of the wine-growing environment in a natural and sustainable way.
