Orange wine 2019
El Grifo, Experiencia de Vendimia: Malvasía Orange Wine 2019
El Grifo has been making its Orange Wine from Muscat grapes from our chaboco volcanic holes with no sulphites added. In 2019, we decided to use the same method but with Malvasía Volcánica grapes instead. The batch yielded 1.164 bottles.
PRODUCTION
The Malvasía Volcánica grapes came from the Tinajo area and were harvested on 9 August 2019. The grape bunches were brought to the winery in 18-20 kg crates on the same day, where they were kept in cold storage until the next day. They were then carefully destemmed to keep the grapes intact. These whole grapes started fermenting using our own yeast with no sulfites added. Once fermentation came to an end, we kept the wine with its skins to draw out the aromas and tannins. Then a second fermentation – malolactic fermentation – spontaneously took place. The wine was pressed and the grape skins removed on 4 October 2019, remaining in tanks until 28 May 2020, when it was finally bottled. Since then, it has been bottle-aged.
TASTING NOTES
Colour: Clear and bright. Amber towards orange with golden hues due to the contact with the skins, which provide tannins that gradually oxidise.
Aroma: Medium-high intensity. Candied fruits, bitter almond, flowers (chamomile), hay or fennel. These are the aromas from the production method itself. During bottle ageing, aromas of dried peach and mushroom are developed.
Taste: Strong salinity together with its natural acidity, makes this wine very refreshing. Memories of bitter almonds, dried nuts. The natural evolution of this wine in the bottle gives rise to notes of bread or baked goods.
